For too long, motherhood has been seen as a natural and inevitable part of women’s lives, not worthy of much study. However, the transition to motherhood, with its biological and social implications, is a major change in the lives of many, but not all, women. Understanding the transition to motherhood as an identity change, the archaeology of motherhood examines the social responses to, and the material culture associated with, motherhood. The age at which women had their first child, maternal mortality, and the total number of children per woman are key variables in the demography and social composition of societies. Marriage patterns, post-marital residence, childcare practices, mobility, and migration are complexly interlinked with factors related to motherhood.
