Abstrakt

The use of pain and the play of power differences to enhance sexual pleasure has probably existed throughout human history, and debates about whether and how BDSM may or may not be political or politically desirable have been taking place for at least several decades. In this chapter, we discuss BDSM practices and BDSM communities in relation to intersectional power relations. We draw on theories of non-/performativity to examine how currents of power may be rerouted as well as entrenched in these settings.
