'Subsistence – An Anthropological Subject Analysis' analyses the meaning of the term subsistence from a social and cultural anthropological view point. The paper treats history, uses and definitions in economic and anthropological encyclopedias and dictionaries as well as contemporary use in academic and political debates in the german speaking and arctic area. The author analyses differences in english and german language use and develops a concept-map containing the different aspects which have to be considered when speaking about subsistence. The scope of meanings of this contested term is shown in this overview over different subsistence debates. Central findings of the paper include the identification of an economistic, an ethnic, a gender and a spacial bias which adhere to the term. By deconstructing the western definition of the term 'subsistence economy' as part of an ethnographic category mistake, the author shows how it is used on the one hand as an ideological tool to justify the supremacy of market capitalism. In the german and arctic debates on the other hand it becomes clear that the term has the potential to critizise colonial and patriarchal power relations.
