Abstrakt

The article discusses Juli Zeh’s social novel Unterleuten, published in 2016. The focus lies on the stereotypes of masculinity, which are present in large numbers in the text and affect not only male but also female characters. Based on this observation, the article analyses the fictionalization of masculinity, meaning the concepts of masculinity negotiated in the novel and the way in which they are translated into literature. Finally, the article questions whether the depiction of stereotypes serves the purpose of entertainment or whether it is a subversive procedure intended to criticize gender-related platitudes.
