Our current labor market displays manifold crises with high unemployment rates and increasing dynamics in the work life. Adaptability and identity are meta-skills which enable the learning process necessary to overcome obstacles on the career path. The contribution of this review lies in the focus on the question of whether the meta-skills of career adaptability and identity can actually serve as a bridge over troubled waters for everyone in the working population. This review provides a conceptual model of a decent career that acknowledges challenging circumstances which are found in demographic differences (e.g., age, ethnicity, gender) or structural conditions (e.g., crisis economy) and the antecedents that are necessary to foster individual skills which serve toward various beneficial outcomes.
