Covering the Suffragettes

Abstrakt

This article examines how the fight for women’s suffrage in the UK was perceived and re-interpreted by the Austrian public. It analyses narrative formations and images of reports on the militant British suffrage movement in the German-speaking Austrian press before the First World War. The article discusses feminism as a transnational phenomenon and provides insights into gendered representations of women's activism, media-oriented political strategies, and militancy. It argues that the transnational dynamic of women’s movements and feminisms relied on various practices of knowledge transfer in which supportive as well as critical or exploitative coverage in newspapers played an important role.
