Objectives: Movies are repeatedly used in the rehabilitation of schizophrenia; results of their effect on social cognition are controversial. Our aim was to examine the relationship to media characters or parasocial interaction (Horton & Wohl, 1956), a three-dimensional (cognitive, affective and conative) phenomenon in trait schizotypy, and to explore the relationship of PSI and social cognition. Methods: 48 volunteers with high and 59 controls with low trait schizotypy were matched for age (M = 23,36, SD = 3.490), gender (75% women) and education (M = 13.36 years, SD = 5.26). Measures of schizotypy, verbal intelligence and depression, a naturalistic and a self-report measure of social cognition were completed. Participants were assessed for PSI each time after watching a short part of an amusing, neutral and sad film. Results: A significantly higher affective and conative PSI during the amusing film, independent of verbal intelligence, depression and regularity of television consume, was found in the schizotypy group; as well as a higher conative PSI for the neutral film. Cognitive and affective PSI correlated only self-report, but not naturalistic measures of cognitive and affective ToM. Conclusions: Cognitive processes in perceiving fiction films are different to the ones involved in social cognition. People with trait schizotypy, in contrast to their impaired ToM, experience more emotional involvement, even in neutral films.
